Winter Let Run Orders
During the winter months, some customers may receive notice to let your water run with a stream the size of the diameter of a pencil. Letting the water run at this level will average 0.25 gpm (1/4 gallon per minute) which equals 10,800 gallons in 30 days. A water stream the size of a pencil lead/tip which equates to about a 1/8 gallon per minute for a continuous water run, equals about 5,400 gallons per month.
If your line is susceptible to freezing and the water is run at a slower rate, a freeze-up may still occur. If you receive a notice to let your water run, and do not comply, the property owner will be responsible for damages if a freeze-up occurs.
The City monitors frost levels to determine when letters are issued to certain customers based on past history. By doing this, the City can minimize wasted water and prevent costly main breaks and lateral breaks for customers. The risk of frozen service lines could continue for several weeks and/or months, even after the weather begins to warm.
Customers that comply with the let run order will receive a credit based on an average of previous usage where no let run order was in effect.
